Anyone who tells you you aren’t a real feminist because you dress girly, does not understand feminism.

Just because I wear ribbons in my hair & lace socks with my mary-janes, does not make me any less of a believer that people of all genders deserve to be treated equally. And while I am still ignorant to many things that this sexist society has brainwashed us with, I am most certainly a feminist who is constantly learning & trying to develop as a person. It’s a bit sad really that even that one word, “feminist”, has such negative connotations & weird misconceptions. When to me, in the simplest of terms, a feminist is someone who supports equal rights & opportunities for women. I don’t know if it has to do with attending a university or listening to way too much Bikini Kill, but this topic is even more present in my life than usual. And I’m just tired of people undermining me & my viewpoints purely based on the fact that I like to wear petticoats or whatever.

To go to the circus as a small girl, and to escape with it. To survive a lion-bite. To wear ribbons in one’s hair. To kiss his cheek until his skin dries up. To steal the neighbor’s persimmons. To re-gift them on Christmas day. To camp in a man-made clearing. To talk about love there. To decide that love is you.

To run out of breath. To run into breath. To pick desert flowers for your mother’s mother. To put all your sea shells in a line. To kiss his shoulder until your mouth tastes like motor-oil. To fix the part in your hair. To stare out the window and wait for someone. To make shadow puppets on the bathroom ceiling.

To love incessantly. To watch your roses turn white with mold. To kiss the snowflake from his eyebrow. To save empty wine bottles. To eat marmalade from the jar. To read your horoscope. To collect puddles in clear plastic bags. To dream about his thigh.

To let a straw hat filter sunlight. To listen to modal jazz. To learn how to float in water. To want someone you can not have.

This middle-aged man at a local coffee shop just tapped me on the shoulder & asked if he could draw a picture of me. Apparently it’s because I have “pale skin, gloomy eyes, and look nice with flowers in my hair”. He proceeded to ask if I was on facebook. I said no. So naturally, he wanted my phone number. Instead, I gave him an old hotmail account that I haven’t touched in four years. I feel quite bad because maybe he was actually being genuine. But on the bright side, he offered to buy me coffee anytime & give me a free haircut… so well, there’s that.

I always kid that I want to be someone’s Lolita, but honestly this was a bit too much.
